I remove any dead plant remains after killing frost and have already mulched the flower beds with bark mulch. I mulch our vegetable garden with chopped up leaves picked up by my lawn mower’s bagger system. This year I am going to see if rototilling the leaves under now gives a head start to decomposition and hopefully disrupt some pests which have buried themselves or laid eggs under the soil. Then I dredge through the dark months dreaming of the spring day when I will notice Siberian squill, crocus, daffodil and hyacinth bulbs sprouting out of the mulch signaling an end of another winter.
